Sundar Pichai said at IIT Kharagpur “We at Google want to focus on the usage of Internet in rural areas in India. We are big supporters of the Digital India program. We are also working on digitising payments and I am fully confident that India will be a global player in terms of digital economies,” Cost-effective, an inexpensive smartphone is an absolute must to enable the digital economy and that is what Mr. Pichai and Google is clearly targeting “We would love to see cheaper entry-level smartphones. They are bringing prices down even more to about $30. If you really want to make a difference in India, you have to be in as many languages as possible as English is spoken only by a very few. So we are trying to make Google work in other languages and we are making progress. There is a massive gender gap when it comes to women getting access to internet. So we are teaching rural women how to use smartphones to access the internet. We are also trying to put local businesses online,” Despite teasing a hint on the prospect of a Rs 2000 Android smartphone, Mr. Sundar Pichai hasn’t shared any other details regarding the specifications of the upcoming phone. Well, it might be similar to Android one Program that was launched way back in the year 2014, where Google tied up with Micromax, Spice, and Karbonn to launch cheap smartphones in the country. Well, if you are thinking that the upcoming $30 or Rs. 2000 smartphone from Google could be a Project Ara replacement then let me tell you it is not. However, we can hope it’s a Google branded phone, like the Pixel but will be available for a whole lot less money. So, what do you think about this? Share your views in the comment section below.
